The challenges we experience in our lives present themselves when we’re ready to learn something. Any challenge we face, big or small, come as a sign, to show us what we need to learn, where we need to grow and how we can adjust our sails so that we can get to where we want to be. Until fairly recently, I would not have bought into this notion at all! I would’ve said something along the lines of, “Who are you kidding? Challenges are just there to make life harder!” I can have a little giggle at myself about it now, knowing full well that that’s exactly why I kept getting them. I needed to learn that challenges were nothing more than beautiful opportunities for growth, and be it hard or easy, they would keep coming. Now I know that I am the one who has EVERYTHING to gain and NOTHING to lose from them.
If you sound anything like I used to, then this was written just for you. To bring light to what you may have not been seeing all along, to end the struggle and to help you embrace your growth 100%. Here are 3 positive attitudes you must adopt when overcoming a big (or small) life challenge.
Positive Attitude #1: Take responsibility for your results
Simply observe, without judgement, the results you are experiencing in your life right now. Are they what you want them to be? If yes, awesome! Keep doing what you have been doing. If not, is it possible that you are contributing to this situation? Could it be your excuses or limiting beliefs that are holding you back? There is true power in recognising that you are the problem and you are the solution in every challenge you face. This realization can open up infinite possibilities, because you’re no longer playing the victim. You are the victor. You are in control and you are fully responsible.
Positive Attitude #2: Ask the question “What can I learn from this?” more
Right now, pull out a piece of paper and write down the challenge you’re facing. Then write down the question “What can I learn from this?” This will automatically shift your attention from focusing on the problem to learning the lessons. Challenge yourself to write down just ONE lesson to start with. However small it may appear to be, write it down. Then notice how a new idea comes to mind, and another, and just when you think you’re done, one more. Keep writing, keep learning. Free yourself from the struggle, embrace the learning. It’s a gift.
Positive Attitude #3: Improve your bounce back-ability
Having bounce back-ability means you can quickly pick yourself up when life throws you a curveball. It means you respect yourself enough to not allow the negative circumstances, behaviours or words of others affect you by taking up your time and energy. Bounce back-ability is a learned skill, and like any skill, the more you practice it, the better you get. Choose a bounce back ritual such as taking 3 deep breaths or playing your favourite song to quickly shift your focus. Then practice, practice and practice some more. Watch how much space you create for happiness to flow in, every time you choose to bounce back!
The next time you face a challenge, I hope you’ll choose to adopt one of these positive attitudes. Remember, it’s not about what happens, it’s about the meaning we give it so always choose positive and empowering meanings.
