Networking is a necessity and can set you on a pathway to success and open the doors of opportunity. While physically getting out and about to network might be impossible for your schedule, luckily we live in a world with technology, making networking easier than ever. Here are a few tips on how you can build your network from the comfort of your home:
1) Social Media
Even though you might boycott social media, you probably already know it’s networking at your fingertips, 24/7. Different social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. can be a wonderful place to connect with employers and other like-minded humans, especially in the creative field.
There is a lot of chatter about social media actually sucking the social out of our souls and real lives. But if you use social media for the right reasons, making connections on these platforms is what actually keeps the digital world, human, connecting those around the globe. I have personally connected with brands and made friends from all over the world on Instagram, while also opening doors that wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s truly a unique time that we live in, and the opportunities are endless if only we make an effort.
LinkedIn really is the number go-to for networking, even though it’s often overlooked. If you want to start networking on LinkedIn, here’s a few pointers:
- Make sure you have a detailed profile.
- Add former classmates, and anyone you currently or previously have had a professional relationship with.
- To make new connections and network your socks off, join groups that focus on your industry and interests.
- PARTICIPATE in those groups you join and have a voice! Get to know other group members and exchange knowledge from your noggins.
- Post status updates and blog posts.
3) Blogs, Groups, and Forums
If you don’t know what you’re passionate about, you need to figure that out first. But if you do know what you’re passionate about, follow blogs and forums are just that! Whatever you fancy, I can guarantee there is a blog that shares the same passions. Leave comments, respond to threads, and you’ll start meeting people and gaining new knowledge in a jiffy.
