Ever feel like you’re just coasting professionally? Rest assured you’re not the only one. It’s all too easy to slip into a routine and only stick to doing what you’re comfortable with, but over time, this can limit your creativity and passions. Yes, getting out of your routine takes extra effort, but there’s actually a lot of science that explains why it’s difficult to break out of your comfort zone and why it’s so beneficial when you do. When you break out of your comfort zone, you challenge yourself to perform at your peak. Also, doing things outside of your comfort zone can make you more creative and in the long run, help you to grow.
So how can you break out of your comfort zone in your professional life? Here are some simple ways to shake things up a bit:
Learn Something New
Are you passionate about something, but never seem to get around to doing it? Maybe you’ve always wanted to travel somewhere, pick up a new language, or even start a blog. Rather than pushing things off until tomorrow, why not start today? While you might not reach your goal overnight, remember that by taking baby steps, you’ll get there over time. Making it a priority to do something you love may just give you the spark you need to reignite your passion. Also, you might find that learning a new skill makes you more valuable at work!
Make The Call
Do you hide behind email and text messages? While this might be an easy way to communicate, you could be missing out on big opportunities. By chatting in person or over the phone with a co-worker, client, or even your boss, you can improve your communication skills and gain new insight.
Face Your Fear
No one likes to talk about the things they’re afraid of, but the first step in conquering your fears is to admit them! Are you terrified of public speaking? Attend a public speaking training seminar so you can practice and improve your skills. Are you afraid of conflict? Know that it’s better to address issues in real time, and don’t be afraid to reach out to someone you trust for advice.
Learn To Be Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable
We all know that with trying new things often comes some awkward situations. While this might not be so fun in the moment, don’t let it scare you away! Remember that great things take time, so it’s completely normal to feel uncomfortable in the beginning. As you pursue new ventures in your career, learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Over time, you’ll learn to embrace it, which will only help you to grow.
In the end, it’s always a good idea to push yourself and try new things, especially when it comes your career. As you try out these tips and step out of your comfort zone, you might surprise yourself by what you’re capable of.
